Beethoven Chorus: Notes from Wednesday Night's Rehearsal

Dear Beethoven Singers,

Great work this evening at the rehearsal.  I can tell that many of you put in some work since Monday.  The things that were fixed on Monday stayed fixed tonight (for the most part)!
Because of the fluctuating numbers at each venue it will be necessary to seat the choir at each venue.  The seating that you had tonight will be fluid.  You may not be precisely in the same spot.  Because of this, here are some revised call times for the remainder of the week for the chorus.  Remember to WARM UP before arriving.  We will do a group warm up, but it will not be an extensive warm up.
Schedule:

July 16:  Kingsford:   Afternoon rehearsal CALL AT 1:00 CDT, rehearsal is at 1:30-4:30 CDT, we will rehearse the last movement first.  (There will be plenty of time to get something to eat.)
CONCERT CALL TIME:  6:30 CDT (This is to double-check the seating, not everyone can make the rehearsal—Be dressed and ready to sing)

July 17:  Marquette CALL TIME at 5:30 EDT, short sound check rehearsal at 6:00 EDT.  This is our only rehearsal time in that space.

July 18:  Houghton  CALL TIME at 5:30 EDT, short sound check rehearsal at 6:00 EDT.

Here are some notes from tonight.

The biggest way we can improve is to generally give more diction on initial consonants and make sure that you are watching the conductor, especially on initial sectional entrances.  Don is being very generous with his cues to the choir.  Please take advantage of the opportunity!

p. 9  FFFFRRRRRReude!  Much more initial consonant, men!  Let the audience know that it is your turn to sing.
p. 18  More K on Küsse.  Anticipate the and beat and make sure that the vowel lands on the beat.
p. 23  Men more initial words, “Laufet, Brüder”.  Once again put the initial consonant before the beat to make the vowel land on the beat.  Tall, bright sound
p. 25  “Freudig”  I think you know what I am going to ask for, yep, more FR.
p. 28  Standing together at the end of the page is still sloppy.  Stand precisely, as if your life depended on it!  Scores up, ready to sing “the great Beethoven moment”.
p. 34  Much improved articulation, Bravo!  Men, listen to the pitch on the first high E of Millionen.  It is under pitch.
p. 38  “stürzt” can be much more rhythmic.  This slow section must feel an inner pulse in each singer.  Subdivide to help precision!  The word “Ihr” can be darker at this spot.  Make it full of awe.  Sing it much more reverently.
p. 38  m. 636 (bottom system, fourth bar) Tenors be careful about your skip up to the F.  The high note was too loud.  Make sure it fits with the balance of the whole group.
p. 39  Last measure, Ladies, COUNT, COUNT, COUNT.  This must be rhythmic, even though it is soft.
p. 40  Women, be precise with your placement of the final “s” in muss.  There should be space between “muss" and “erwohnen."
p. 41  Make sure to have a pure vowel on the first entrances, Women.  The diphthong is getting in the way.  Watch, watch, watch for tempo.  You do not need to look at your score for the first 2 lines.

EVERYONE during the fugue needs to watch the conductor.  Remember the articulation that we have worked with.  Whenever you sing interjections of “Freude” please emphasize the diction.  All initial entrances of a subject need to have more initial consonant.
p. 53  Make sure you feel the triplet rhythm that is under your part.  The quarter notes sometimes are coming in a hair to early.  Feel two triplets in each measure.  Let this have a kind of lilt in the rhythm.
p. 54  BRRRRRRRRRüder.
p. 61  Bottom of the page needs to be very rhythmic!  Watch the conductor.
p. 62  Top of page needs a little more bass.
p. 66  ZZZZZZZZeit (Seid) make more of the initial consonant.  Anticipate the beat.
p. 73  The “s” in aus is all over the place.  Make sure it lands squarely on the “and” of beat 3.  Don is giving it to you.  Make sure you are watching the conductor here!

Folks in the back row, trust your eyes.  Make sure you are with the conductor.  Hold your scores up high.

Remember not to wear perfume to any of the performances or rehearsals.

Thanks for your hard work and sacrifice.  The performance is going to be FABULOUS!
